Vurr Socks in Progress. Sokid edenevad.

 

I have finished one sock except the heel. At first I thought I make short-row heels. When I started the heel I realised it will interrupt how the gradient colours flow on the sock. I opted for the Peasant Heel , it will be knitted on later.  I used Lori's Twisted Bind-Off. to finish the sock. 

Now I have to examine the gradient skein and figure out how I get matching socks. I know it's ok when they do not match but I like mine to be as similar as possible.

Üks sokk on peaaegu valmis, ainult kand on jäänud teha. Esialgne idee oli teha kand lühikeste ridadega. Siis aga tuli meelde, et värviüleminekuga lõnga puhul jääb sokile nähtav triip sinna, kus kand on sisse kootud, ja seda ma ei tahtnud. Kudusin tulevase kanna kohale abilõnga, mille hiljem välja harutan ja Peasant Heel kanna koon. Silmuste mahakudumisel kasutasin seda moodust Lori's Twisted Bind-Off..

Nüüd vaja uurida järelejäänud lõngatokki ja teha kindlaks, kust alustada teise sokiga, et see saaks samasugune. Olen teinud erisuguseid sokke ka, aga ühesugused meeldivad rohkem ;)

Would you like to knit a pair of socks with me? This subtle pattern works up quickly and is easily memorable. I called the pattern Vurr because it goes fast and the motif reminds me of a spinning top
which is "vurr" in Estonian. See how far I got last night watching knitting podcasts? I think it's a unisex pattern, suitable for everyone. 

It is a slip-stitch  mosaic pattern. You work one round in one colour, next round in the other colour, slipping the stitches  marked with "V" in the chart. No need to carry both yarns at the same time. Easy-peasy! I knit my socks toe-up with a short-row heel. I make the soles in the same pattern. You can use the chart and knit socks in your preferred method. The chart has 8 stitch repeat, so you have to cast on 56, 64, 72, 80 sts. The stitch pattern looks the same worked toe up or cuff down.

Mustrimaalima foorumis on jaanuar-veebruar mosaiik-koes sokkide kudumise kuu! Kududa võib nii foorumis etteantud mustri järgi, kui ka mõne muu mosaiikkoes mustri järgi. 

Oma sokkide jaoks joonistasin selle lihtsa skeemi. Üks rida ühevärviga, teine teisega, V-ga tähistatud silmused tõstan kudumata üle. Nii lihtne see ongi!

Motiiv näeb välja kui vurr, seega Vurri sokid!

Mamma Slippers. Mamma sussid.

First pattern release of the year is Mamma Slippers. I believe you have seen crocheted granny square slippers? I like the look of a well-made granny square slippers. Usually, they are colourful and fun. The only thing what bothers me about crocheted slippers, they are quite open, big gaps between stitches. I decided to design slippers with the same construction but using mosaic knit squares. 

Six squares are needed for each slipper. I designed six different motifs each can be made in inverted colours also. I had so much fun with motifs, couldn't stop drawing new ones! Next time I make the slippers, I might use more colours too.

The slippers can be made to fit most feet. You need to swatch to get the size you need. The size of the slipper is determined by the size of the squares made. The size of the square depends on the gauge of your knitting. Sizing information is given in the pattern. 

The squares are quick and fun to make. Sew the squares together for a charming pair of slippers to keep your toes warm and cosy.

Selle aasta esimene muster, Mamma sussid, on inspireeritud heegeldatud vanaema-ruudu sussidest. Mulle meeldivad nood värvikirevad heegeldatud sussid. Ainus asi, mis häirib, et heegeldus on tavaliselt küllalt hõre. Mamma sussid kasutavad sama konstruktiooni, kuid ruurdud on hoopis kootud mosaiiktehnikas.

Iga sussi jaoks läheb vaja kuut ruutu. Joonistasin kuus erinevat motiivi. Nii tore oli mängida mustritega! Järgmine kord ehk koon värvikirevad sussid, iga ruut ise värvi. 

Sussi suurus sõltub ruudu suurusest. Suurusmõõtude tabel on mustris antud. Koo proovilapp ja muuda vajadusel varda suurust, et saada õige suurusega sussid.

Ruudukeste kudumine läheb kiirelt. Järgmiseks jõuluks jõuab hulga paare kududa teiste tööde vahel! ;)

 

Looking back at 2020. Tagasivaade aastale 2020.

It's time to look back at 2020! Design-wise it was a good year! 22 new pattern releases + 2 older patterns updated. A year before, in 2019, I also released 24 patterns. The number is the same, but there were more large projects in 2020.

I do not plan ahead much, maybe a month or two. I have no idea what new year will bring! Sometimes ideas just pop into my head and get done quickly other projects might take years to complete. I would like to design more garments. It's a long process and not so easy, to begin with. Some shawls and blankets would be nice. So many ideas! One thing is sure, I'm still addicted to mosaic knitting.

Üks asi on kindel, aasta 2020 oli tegus! Avaldasin 22 uut mustrit, lisaks veel kaks vanemat mustrit ümber töötatud ja parendatud. 2020 oli numbriliselt sarnane aastale 2019, kui ma avaldasin samuti 24 mustrit, kuid paljud neist olid väikesed linikukesed või pajalapid. Möödunud aastal sai avaldatud neli teki mustrit, mille üle olen tõeliselt uhke!

Mis edasi? Mida toob aasta 2021? Ma ei tee pikaajalisi plaane ega oska öelda, mis tuleb. Tahaks avaldada mõne kampsun mustri, kuid see on minusuguse algaja jaoks pikaajaline protsess. Lisaks tahaks teha mõned sallid ja tekid. Üks asi on kindel, mosaiiktehnika jääb põhiliseks ka sel aastal.

Christmas Stocking Rally Starts Tomorrow! Jõulusokiralli algab homme!

Every year I think about creating some Christmas patterns but never got inspired enough. This year was different, inspiration hit me hard. I have not just one but four Xmas stocking patterns coming over the next couple of weeks! 

Do you love colourful patterned Christmas Stockings but are intimidated by stranded colourwork? Mosaic knitting is the solution! It is a fun and easy way of knitting with two colours to create a colourwork pattern which looks much more complicated than it is. The beauty of mosaic knitting is that it only uses one of the yarns at a time, while the other waits at the beginning of the round.

Linnutee Top Pattern.

 

When you get together with a yarny friend you visit a yarn store, right? I usually buy at least a skein to support a small business, what the yarn stores often are. These gradient yarn cakes are so pretty! My friend helped me to choose the colour. At first, I didn't have a clear idea of what I'm going to make. I didn't want a shawl but 600 meters of fingering weight yarn isn't enough for a shirt in my size. I chose a solid contrasting colour and cast on.

So I had this gorgeous gradient yarn cake and I wanted to make a sleeveless top. I didn't want to interrupt the flow of the gradient colours. The best way seemed to be knitting in rounds without short-row shaping. Wide-open ballet neckline looks nice for a summery shirt. 

I'm obsessed with mosaic knitting. I designed a little bird motif for the #Loojangulinnud shawl and wanted to use it again. It’s exciting to knit with gradient yarn and see colours slowly emerging and changing.

Mosaic knitting is an easy way to create striking colourwork. Mosaic knitting is perfect for beginners who are attempting colourwork for the first time. Just knit and slip stitches, one colour at the time. No need to carry both yarns.

The shirt is worked from top down, starting with I-cord cast-on. The ribbing on armholes and at the bottom is finished with I-cord also. It makes a nice and firm finish which does not stretch out.

See imelise värvivahetusega lõngakera tuli koju lihtsalt sellepärast, et oli nii ilus! Esialgu mõtlesin salli teha, kuid salle on juba tehtud hulga. 600 meetrit 8/2 lõnga on minu suuruse särgi jaoks vähe. Kuna mul on ikka veel mosaiik mustrite kudumise isu, siis oli otsus lihtne. Leidsin sobiva kontrastse ühevärvilise lõnga, linnumotiiv tuli Loojangulindude sallist ja nii see top lõpuks valmis sai.

Südasuvine Shawl.

I can finally say I did it! I started to design this shawl three years ago. I made several swatches and charts before I was happy with it. The Südasuvine (Estonian for Midsummery) shawl is worked in one piece from the bottom up. Cleverly placed increases on both sides and in the body of the shawl create a triangular shawl with elongated points, cosy to wrap yourself in. The tip is quite narrow and at first, it looks like the wingspan isn't going to be wide enough. Still, by the end, you get nice long wings due to invisible increases in the heart pattern.

Placemat and coaster in mosaic knit pattern

I have been busy with mosaic knitting and charting new designs. Today I released the Breakfast at Tiffany's placemat and coaster set pattern. There is going to be another set with a similar mosaic pattern soon. I know my placemats will be used every day. The previous set, Come Dine with Me, which I made last year, has been in use since then and still looks good.

What else is on my needles? The most exciting new item is a summer top with mosaic yoke. It's my first ever garment pattern. I have made garments for myself and my daughter but never graded a pattern in several sizes. I've learnt so much in this process! The pattern is on my tech editor's table right now.

Another project I'm working on is a mosaic blanket (again, I know!). It's worked all in one piece, quite big and heavy. I manage to knit just some rows now and then. I hope it will be finished by August. Some swatches can be seen on the last photo below.

DIY Water Bottle Holder. Tee ise: Veepudeli kott.

I like to go for a walk most days. Sometimes I take a water bottle with me. I have broken one already, just slipped from my hand and fell in million pieces despite it was a plastic bottle. Another thing is, the water gets hot when I keep the bottle in my hand. It would be easy to get a bottle holder online for couple of pounds but where is the fun there? Why I should get something cheaply made in China when I can make one what I really like?

Ma käin jalutamas peaaegu iga päev. Palava ilmaga võtan veepudeli kaasa. Ühe pudeli olen juba ära lõhkunud, lihtsalt libises käest ja purunes kildudeks, kuigi oli plastmassist pudel. Teine probleem on, et vesi läheb pudelis soojaks, kui pudel on käes. Muidugi võiks ju osta koti paari euro eest, aga see pole ju lõbus! Milleks osta midagi, mis on odavalt tehtud Hiinas, kui võin ise teha täpselt sellise, nagu soovin?

Last year, before designing the White Star Blanket, I knitted a lot of mosaic swatches, using leftover wool. Wool is good for insulation, right? I decided to felt swatches and make a bag. 100% natural wool is good for felting. I put the squares in a washing machine, short 30 minutes cycle in 40 degrees C, no detergent.  The squares were slightly felted. I ran another cycle. Now the swatches were beautifully felted.

Eelmisel aastal kudusin hulga mosaiikkoes proovilappe enne, kui asusin White Star tekki kuduma. Kasutasin igasuguseid villase lõnga jääke. Vill on ju hea isolatsioonimaterjal? Otsustasin proovilapid ära viltida ja kasutada neid koti tegemiseks. Viskasin nad pesumasinasse, ilma pesuvahendita, lühike 30 minutine tsükkel, 40 kraadi. Lapid vildistusid veidi. Lasin nad veel teist korda samamoodi masinast läbi. Seekord tulid välja ilusasti vilditud lapid.

Now was time for hand-sewing. I used two squares for the bag. One square was folded in halves to create a pocket for a phone or sunglasses. A piece of furnishing fabric was cut for the bottom of the bag and a rope for the shoulder strap. I'm really happy with the result!

When my husband saw the felted squares he said, those would make a nice bedside rug for him. Never know, maybe that's my next project! ;)

Nüüd oli käes aeg natuke õmmelda. Voltisin ühe ruudu pooleks, sellest moodustus tasku mobiili või päikeseprillide jaoks. Koti põhi sai tehtud mööbliriide jäägist, üle-õla-rihmaks on nöör. Võibolla vahetan nööri välja, kui sobivama rihma leian. Tulemusega olen igatahes rahul!

Kui abikaasa nägi vilditud lapikesi arvas, et neist saaks voodi ette kena vaibakese. Kes teab, võibolla on see mu järgmine projekt. ;)

Knitted Soft Book. Kootud pehme raamat.

As you might know, I've been self-publishing knitting patterns for years. I have several patterns published in E-magazines also, which is great! Yesterday I had my first pattern published in a printed magazine, Your Crochet and Knitting, issue 18. It's an amazing feeling, open the magazine and find my pattern among others. The magazine is full of interesting patterns! I love that cushion with a bird on the front cover and tiny garden birds. The magazine comes with a yarn pack, knitting needles and crochet hook included, so one could cast on straight away. I think is a great idea, especially on times like we have now with the lockdown. 

The pattern I proposed and was accepted for publishing is a soft baby-book. It contains eight colourwork charts, the letters A, B, C, D and pictures of an Apple, Boat, Cat and Duck. The squares are worked in mosaic knitting technique, directions given in the magazine. Ever so often I hear, oh, mosaic, never tried it, sounds too complicated. Afraid not, it is actually very easy, suitable for beginners. If you know a knit stitch and slip stitch, that's all you need! 

I have been designing mosaic motifs for over a year. I've used them for the White Star blanket, cushions, washcloths, coasters. Still, I didn't have a good idea for kids items. I started to think, what do I use them for? Washcloth? Baby blanket? I asked for ideas in a Facebook group. One of the suggestions was a soft book. And here it is! Enjoy!

Ma olen kudumismustreid kirja pannud ja avaldanud juba õige mitu aastat. Mitmed mustrid on ka E-ajakirjades ilmunud. Eile oli tähtis päev, sest avaldati esimene minu muster trükitud ajakirjas. Imeline tunne on avada ajakiri, ning leida oma töö teiste vahvate mustrite seas. 

Alustasin mosaiik-koes motiivide disainimisega üle aasta tagasi. See on lõbus tegevus! Paljusid motiive olen kasutanud tassialuste, pesulappide ja teki ning patjade jaoks. Hulga lastepäraseid motiive on jäänud siiani kasutamata. Üks idee oli neist beebitekk kokku panna, kuid otsisin veel uusi võimalusi. Küsisin ühes Facebooki grupis nõu, mida teha. Üks soovitustest oli pehme beebiraamat.

Through the Daisies. Jalgupidi karikakrais.

When I first published the Through the Daisies sock pattern, it had a different cuff pattern, inspired by flower petals. The sock pattern has been loved since, just the cuff wasn't everyones taste. Someone commented, it looked like screwdrivers! Several people changed the cuff. I decided to add another option, a new cuff chart. I used Drops Nord Pearl-grey and Drops Fabel Sunset yarn. I love how a self-striping sock yarn creates striking colourwork easily. 

Currently, just the Through the Daisies Cuff Down has the new chart. 

I will updated the toe-up version (Tiptoe Through the Daisies) later in the year.

Mäletate veel seda sokimustrit? Muster nägi ilmavalgust kaks ja pool aastat tagasi. Siis oli teistsugune muster sokisäärel. Paljud muutsid sääremustrit oma maitsekohaseks. Egas see just ilusaim muster polnud, kuid tol hetkel oli see minu valik. Nüüd tekkis idee uue ja aeg uue säärmustri lisamiseks. Praegusel momendil sai uue sääre ainult ülalt alla kootud mustrivariant. 

Varbast alustatud variant ootab veel oma aega, kuid tuleb ka see. 

Through the Daisies (cuff down) täiendatud variant on saadaval soodushinnaga kuni maikuu lõpuni!

New Pattern, New Test Knitting. Uus muster, uus testkudumine.

The third pattern from the Sock Doodles series is released on Ravelry and going to be available on LoveCrafts shortly. For this Hearty Steps socks, I used less than 50 grams of self-striping sock yarn, Drops Fabel in Sunset colourway, and some solid leftover yarns. The heart pattern was created by slipping the stitches when working two rows in one colour, two rows in another colour. No need to carry both yarns same time! Easy-peasy!

Kolmas muster mosaiik sokimustrite peres on Hearty Steps. Seekord kasutasin isetriibutavat sokilõnga Drops Fabel koos ühevärviliste lõngajääkidega. Kaks rida on kootud ühe lõngaga, kaks teisega, samal ajal moodustub südamemuster kudumata üle tõstetud silmustest. Nii lihtne see ongi, pole mingit kahe lõngaga korraga mässamist! 

Next up is a new test knitting, the intarsia blanket/afghan. I've shown it before as a MKAL project. This time I opened the test knitting in English. If you are interested in testing the pattern, please join in HERE.

The Elly’s afghan/blanket was inspired by abstract geometric art. I find geometric abstraction very eyecatching and as a knitter, very knittable. After examing several paintings, I started to experiment with shapes and figuring out the movement of the lines, before I came up with my design.

Also, the pattern can be used for making a wall hanging instead of a blanket. Why not use finer yarn and different fibre, like cotton or acrylic for smaller wall decoration?

Working in intarsia is fairly easy for an advanced beginner who is comfortable with the basic knit and purl stitches. You just have to be careful and organized working from 7-9 skeins simulatneously.

MKAL progress & New Release. Salakudumised edenevad & Uus muster.

The Mystery Knit-a-long on Mustrimaailm forum is going strong. Sunray was the fastest, she has finished already. She made some modifications in the pattern and used more colours. Look at this great result! It's a work of art! I'm still working on the English pattern.

Mustrimaailma salakudumine edeneb hoogsalt, kui just aiatööd vahele ei trügi. Sunray oli kiireim, tal juba tekk, koos väikeste muudatustega, valmis. Vaata ja imetle kunstiteost!

I've been so busy organizing test knits, Mystery KAL's and pattern releases. 

The latest pattern release was Loojangulinnud shawl. It's a mosaic pattern, knit in bias. I love the birds motifs in mosaic. It's the third design with birds, all of them different. I'm quite sure there is going to be more birds, so versatile, graphic motif.

Olen üsna hõivatud test- ja salakudumistega ning uute mustrite avaldamisega. Viimati nägi ilmavalgust salli Loojangulinnud muster. See on juba kolmas disain, kus kasutan mosaiik-koes linnumotiivi. Arvan, et see ei jää viimaseks.

Just noticed I haven't mentioned here about the second MKAL, mosaic socks. Silver Rhombi sock pattern is currently tested in Ravelry in English. The Estonian version is used for another MKAL on Mustrimaailm forum. Have a look at some samples from the MKAL:

The Silver Rhombi pattern is going to be released in the end of May or at the beginning of June. Before that the Hearty Steps sock pattern will be released. Here are all four pairs of socks from the Sock Doodles E-book. Two patterns are released, two more to come. All patterns are/will be available as individual downloads on Ravelry and LoveCrafts. The best value is to get the Ebook, available on Ravelry.

Doodles

Despite I finished knitting all four samples of the Sock Doodles I still have plenty of work to do.

The first two patterns from the Sock Doodles Ebook are released, the Doodles and the Scribbles.

Why it's called doodles? Because I've been doodling with mosaic knit patterns, slip-stitches and leftover yarns.

 The third pattern, Hearty Steps, is in test knitting in my Ravelry group.

The fourth pattern is still a secret. I started a mystery knit-a-long in the Mustrimaailm forum and reveal the pattern step by step.

Sock Doodles ehk Soki-kritseldused on kogumik mosaiik-koes sokimustreid, mis sündisid "kritseldades" / miksides erinevaid mustreid ja sokilõngade jääke. Kokku tuleb neli mustrit, millest kaks on valmis, kolmas test-kudumisel ja neljas on veel saladus. Kuid seda saladust pole enam kauaks, sest Mustrimaailmas algab selle mustri salakudumine ning muster saab samm sammu haaval avalikustatud.
