Butterfly Heart Top.

I haven't worked often from other designers patterns in recent years. One exception is the Indie Design Gift-a-long at the end of the year, where I participate as a knitter and designer. It's such a great event.
I had a long holiday recently. I took all my designing gear with me, laptop, yarns, needles and books. I got quite a bit of work done despite the beautiful weather. Finally, I decided enough of work, let's knit from a ready-made pattern! It was supposed to be a relaxing knit following the pattern. I picked the Butterfly Heart Top pattern by Drops Design. So like me, to pick a pattern with interesting details, not the easiest one! I had to follow several charts and written instructions at the same time. Once I finished the lace yoke, it was easy stockinette stitch to the end.  Before starting, I looked at projects made in Ravelry, read comments and made my own adjustments. I listed all the adjustments I made on my Ravelry project page.
I'm very happy with the top!

Valituks osutus Butterfly Heart Top Dropsi mustrite varamust. Pitsilise osa kudumine polnud just kõige lihtsam, sest printerit ma ju kaasa ei vedanud.

What's On My Needles? Mis on varrastel?

Are you curious what's on my needles? After finishing the Bay of Biscay mitts pattern I decided to work with mosaic patterns again. I've shared several free charts here earlier, a Duck, a Boat, Butterflies, maybe something else, can't remember at the moment. I was about to release a Kitty chart but got distracted by an idea to develop it to a sock pattern. The socks turned out cute. Have a look at the photo below, it's an initial sample. Since then I've knit another pair, written the pattern, got it tech edited and now my trusty test knitters are busy testing different sizes of the socks. I still need to get some photos taken before I can release the pattern. So pity I don't have any cats around for a photoshoot.

The next idea was to make mitts with kitty pattern. I've made a sample but it needs tweaking. I've put it on hold until I get suitable yarn for another sample.

Summer is here and I would love to have a new cotton top, haven't made any for myself recently. I was browsing patterns in Ravelry and decided to knit the Butterfly Heart top instead of designing my own pattern. It meant to be an easy knit. Turned out it's not an easy pattern at all! Need to follow 3-4 charts and written instructions with a lot of "At the same time..." going on. I'm on holiday, no printer here, have to follow everything on the screen. As you can see I manage somehow, it's growing!

Butterfly Heart Top in progress

Millega olen tegelenud, mida kudunud? Vardad on ikka töös, kuigi toodangu hulgaga kiidelda ei saa. Peale Biskaia Lahe sõrmituid kindaid oli soov jälle mosaiiki kududa. Olen sel aastal loonud hulga mosaiik mustrite skeeme. Esimene sokipaar on alloleval fotol. Korrigeerisin skeemi, lisasin suurusi, kirjutasin mustri juhendi. Nüüdseks on juhend korrektori käest läbi käinud ja testkudujad töötavad hoolega. Loodan mustri avaldamisküpseks saada lähipäevadel. Kas oleksid huvitatud mu mustreid inglise keelest eesti keelde tõlkima?

Kudumiseni!

Turquoise Holidays Top. Napikas.

My dear readers might remember the cardigan I knitted last year. I had a bit more than three skeins of the yarn left over, not much really. At first I thought I should order a couple of skeins but finally I decided just try and see what I can get out of those three skeins. I started to knit from the top down, measuring the item and weighing the yarn as I progressed. I knitted some short rows to shape the bust area and went up in needle size on hips. I weighed the yarn after each pattern repeat so I could cast off when there was not enough yarn left to knit another pattern repeat. The initial idea was to knit i-cord for shoulder straps however after finishing the body I had 14 grams of the yarn left for them. It took a few attempts to find the right pattern for shoulder straps and I had to match the amount of the yarn and width of the pattern. I sewed the straps on so I could  determine the right placing for them.
I am really happy with the result. Waiting for some hot holidays now.
My project is in Ravelry.

Puusaosa on kootud pool numbrit suuremate varrastega.

Violet Persimmons Sweater. Uus kampsun, ehk Talv tuleb niikuinii.

I did not have any plans to knit a sweater for me this summer. As soon as I saw new sweater Season of Persimmons from Connie, I was hooked. I really liked the geometric design of it. I asked Connie does she need a test knitter and I were really happy when she said yes. I made some changes in stitch counts because my yarn, Drops Cotton Merino, was slightly thicker than required.

I am very happy with the result. By the way, the sweater can be worn inside out as well, looks great both ways.                         The instructions are easy to follow and very well written. Connie is very talented designer. I love her shawls and sweaters for which she designs her own stitch patterns. I hope to knit the Tulip Shawl soon.
My project in Ravelry.

Tegelikult polnud mul mingit plaani suvel kampsunit kududa, aga kui Ravelrys yellowcosmo uus sviiter Season of Persimmons silma jäi, pakkusin end kohe testkudujaks. Mind huvitas see omapärane geomeetriline disain. Muuseas, kampsun on kahtepidi kantav, ka pahem pool näeb põnev välja. Minu lõng, Drops Cotton Merino, on soovitatust veidi jämedam, seetõttu muutsin natuke silmuste arvu. Oleksin ju võinud vähe avarama kududa, aga alati on ju lootus kaalust alla võtta ;) Lugesin ka kommentaare lõnga kohta, et see venib. Varrukad juba venisid peale pesu pikemaks.

Õpetus on hästi arusaadavalt kirjutatud. Connie on andekas disainer, tal on palju põnevaid salli- ja kampsunimustreid. Tulbisalli võtan varsti varrastele.

Cowl Neck Top. Toru-kaelusega pluus.

The first thing I have to admit is that I am lazy. I just cannot be bothered to trace a new pattern every time I want to sew something. So for this top I took a pattern from Ottobre 2/2014, design number 3 that I have used before.
There are actually no similarities with the pattern as the original top is gathered at the neckline and has short sleeves.
I used the same fabric that I used for the zippered top I had made earlier and added some detail from the bat-wing top leftover fabric scraps which I used other side up.

I didn’t use a pattern for the details, I just cut freehand as the shapes of the scraps allowed. I applied the details of top of the main fabric and stitched them down using a stretchy decorative stitch with my sewing machine.
The cowl neck is just a tube sewn from double fabric.
The outcome of this is quite a lovely top :)

Alustuseks pean tunnistama, et olen laisk. No ma ei viitsi iga kord uut lõiget välja ajada.
Kirju kangas on nahkhiirepluusi ülejäägi pahem pool.
Ahjaa, kirjud osad on õmmeldud põhikanga peale, aplitseeritud, oleks ehk õigem öelda. Pluus on overlokiga kokku lastud, detailid tavamasinaga peale kinnitatud. Kasutasin erinevaid venivaid iluõmblusi, mida mu vanal Huskystar 215-l palju just pole.
Näitaks hea meelega seljas pilti ka, kuid sellega on kummalised lood. Oled ehk märganud, et mul on enamikel fotodel mobiil käes. Kasutasin seda kaugpäästikuna. Fotokas ja mobiil on mõlemad Samsungid, seaded/resolutsioonid keeratud mõlemal maksimumile. Kummagagi eraldi pilte tehes on pildi suurus mitmeid megabaite.

Inspired by the Helmut Lang test knit.

When Boknits were looking for test knitters in January this sweater caught my eye with it’s interesting pattern combination and raglan lines. It is knitted in my favourite way, from top to bottom in one piece. For the yarn, I chose Drops Baby Alpaca Silk, which I doubled to get the correct gauge. I have knit raglan from top down before, but this time I struggled a little bit to set it up and get going. In order to get the pattern to run, I had to follow a number of different patterns pieces and increases. Finally I took the descriptions and a new Excel spreadsheet and drew up a chart to get an idea of what was going on and after the first ten rows the knitting went quite smoothly.
Looking at the other testers ongoing sweaters, I decided that I wanted my sweater to be a bit longer.  However after blocking, it turned out to be too long, the garter stitch and a holy pattern stretched it greatly in length. This was the reason for not posting about the sweater earlier but now I have taken it and ripped it back a good 10 cm. The winter is here again and I can finally start to wear the sweater and I love it!
Pattern:  Inspired Sweater

My project in Ravelry.

Kootud on see minu lemmikviisil, ülevalt alla ühes tükis. Lõngaks valisin kodusoleva Drops Baby Alpaka Silk'i, mis kahekordselt võttes andis õige koetiheduse.

Mariusgenser.

Whilst studying and living in Norway for years, my daughter fell in love with the iconic Norwegian sweater called the Mariusgenser / Marius sweater. She has been asking me to knit her one since then and finally for her birthday she got one.

Unn Søiland Dale, a Norwegian designer and businesswoman, designed the Marius sweater pattern for a 1953 film Troll in Words and was named after the skier Marius Erikson.
The Marius sweater is knitted in a pattern inspired by the traditional Setesdal sweaters but without lice. Whilst the traditional sweaters used sheep’s natural wool colours, black, grey, brown and white; the Marius sweater is designed using coloured yarns including red, white and blue – the colours of the Norwegian flag.
Sandnes Uldvarefabrik, who own the hand knitting pattern, claims that it has sold over five million copies of the Marius hand knitting pattern in Norway in a variety of colour combinations.
Isn’t it amazing that just one film can make a pattern so popular that even after sixty years it is still being used for knitting sweaters, socks, hats and scarfs?

The original Mariusgenser is a boxy sweater however my daughter wanted it to be more body hugging. I prefer to knit top-down so I knitted the Mariusgenser top-down with set-it sleeves using just the original charts. What I noticed in top-down colour work are the single stitches.
Normally a stich looks like a ‘V’ but in top-down colour work, the stitches are upside-down ‘V’s’.
Is this just an issue for a knitter or doesn’t it matter really? The finished sweater is pretty close to the original assuming that in the chart a stitch looks like a square. Probably just a knitter would notice any difference.

Information about the yarn and needles is on Ravelry.

Aastaid tagasi, õppides ja elades Norras, armus mu tütar  norrakate rahvuskampsunisse, mida kutsutakse Mariusgenser ehk Marius kampsun. Lõpuks saabus aeg, mil selle talle sünnipäevaks kudusin.

Unn Søiland Dale, Norra disainer ja ärinaine, disainis selle mustri 1953. aastal filmi Troll in Words jaoks ja nimetas suusataja Marius Erikson'i auks Marius kampsuniks.
Mariusgenser'i muster on inspireeritud ajaloolistest Setesdal kampsunitest, kuid ilma täppideta  kehaosal.
Sandnes'i Villavabrik   on müünud  rohkem kui viis miljonit mustrikoopiat!

Esialgu see häiris mind, mõtlesin isegi üles harutada.

Another Vintage Sweater. Veel üks vintage kampsun.

I have done a bit of Christmas knitting as many of knitters do at this time of year. I have knitted the Pinafore Jumper by Susan Crawford from A Stitch In Time, Knitting and Crochet Patterns, 1920-1949 Vol. 1. I followed just the stitch pattern from the book but not the technique for  knitting it. I knitted the jumper from the top down in one piece. Because the model is from the nineteen thirties, I decided to use a type of wool that gives a flavor of the era from Pure Southdown Wool. A seriously rough and firm woolen yarn, however after a washing and soaking in hair conditioner it feels somewhat softer. Fortunately, my daughter is not the princess from the fairytale The Princess and the Pea and can wear a sweater knitted in coarser wool on top of a shirt.

Needles: 4 mm for pattern, 3 mm for ribs and collar.

Swatch before and after washing.

Jõulukingiks sai kootud Pinafore Jumper raamatust A Stitch In Time, Knitting and Crochet Patterns, 1920-1949 Vol. 1. Järgisin ainult koekirja, kõik muu on omalooming. Kudusin ülalt alla ühes tükis. Alustasin seljaosa ülalt 70 silmaga vardail. Õlad kujundasin lühendatud ridadega. Varrukad on kohe otse kootud.
Kuna mudel on eelmise sajandi kolmekümnendatest pärit, otsustasin kasutada ajastuhõngulist villast lõnga Pure Southdown Wool.  Tõsine kare villane lõng! Peale pesu ja leotamist juuksepalsamis muutus küll veidi pehmemaks. Õnneks tütar pole mingi Printsess Herneteral ja saab pluusi peal karedamat villast kanda.
Vardad: 4 mm, soonikud ja krae 3 mm.

Vintage Sweater.

I made a proposal in the handicraft forum Isetegija to make something vintage together. I had
some immediate thoughts to knit a sweater from the book  A Stitch in Time Vol.1 . This book has plenty of patterns from the years 1920-1949 and I selected to knit a sweater with the original name of An Attractive Lacy Jumper, a copy of which bears the name of Ena's Sweater in the book. This was supposed to be quick and trouble-free knitting. When starting to knit a raglan sweater it is natural for me to do it from the top down in one piece. Participating in the vintage project I decided to knit the traditional way, bottom-up for the reason that pattern would otherwise be upside down. However, I could not resist the temptation to knit in the round and not separate body pieces. I ordered the same yarn as the instructions given, I grabbed the same number of needles and the work began. The instructions called for eight 25-gram skeins of yarn and I thought it might be not enough. Therefore, just in case, I decided to start knitting from pattern and knit the ribbing later on from top to bottom. That seemed a better option in case of a yarn shortage. I used magic cast on from Knitty and I knitted one pattern repeat following the smallest size given, and surprise, surprise, one skein yarn was almost finished and the jumper was way too wide! Given tension was 28 stitches which equals 10 cm, but I had 28 equaling 14.5 cm! Reluctantly I frogged up and started again. A second attempt was just wide and the quantity of yarn usage was still unsure. I did not want to order more yarn, because you never know whether it is from the same batch and to I would have to pay for postage again. On the third attempt I knitted 12 repeats instead of 17 and it was fine. There are no press studs on the shoulders but buttons are sewn on.
To cast on the sleeve I used the Garnstudio video Cast on for rib.
Yarn Jamieson & Smith 2 Ply Jumper Weight 200 gr.
Needles for rib 2.75 mm, 3 mm for main body.
Kui Isetegija foorumis TK Vintage projekti välja pakkusin, oli mul kohe mõtteis kududa kampsun raamatust A Stitch in Time Vol.1  Selles raamatus on rohkelt aastaist 1920-1949  pärit mudeleid. Valituks osutus originaalnimega An Attractive Lacy Jumper, mille koopia kannab nime Ena’s Sweater.
Nööbid on niisama ilu jaoks peale õmmeldud.
Varruka alustamiseks kasutasin Garnstudio  lehelt sooniku ülesloomivõtet, video Cast on for rib.
Vardad soonikule 2,75 mm, kehaosale 3 mm.
