New Pattern, New Test Knitting. Uus muster, uus testkudumine.

The third pattern from the Sock Doodles series is released on Ravelry and going to be available on LoveCrafts shortly. For this Hearty Steps socks, I used less than 50 grams of self-striping sock yarn, Drops Fabel in Sunset colourway, and some solid leftover yarns. The heart pattern was created by slipping the stitches when working two rows in one colour, two rows in another colour. No need to carry both yarns same time! Easy-peasy!

Kolmas muster mosaiik sokimustrite peres on Hearty Steps. Seekord kasutasin isetriibutavat sokilõnga Drops Fabel koos ühevärviliste lõngajääkidega. Kaks rida on kootud ühe lõngaga, kaks teisega, samal ajal moodustub südamemuster kudumata üle tõstetud silmustest. Nii lihtne see ongi, pole mingit kahe lõngaga korraga mässamist! 

Next up is a new test knitting, the intarsia blanket/afghan. I've shown it before as a MKAL project. This time I opened the test knitting in English. If you are interested in testing the pattern, please join in HERE.

The Elly’s afghan/blanket was inspired by abstract geometric art. I find geometric abstraction very eyecatching and as a knitter, very knittable. After examing several paintings, I started to experiment with shapes and figuring out the movement of the lines, before I came up with my design.

Also, the pattern can be used for making a wall hanging instead of a blanket. Why not use finer yarn and different fibre, like cotton or acrylic for smaller wall decoration?

Working in intarsia is fairly easy for an advanced beginner who is comfortable with the basic knit and purl stitches. You just have to be careful and organized working from 7-9 skeins simulatneously.

How are you coping with these uncertain and worrying times? I'm social-distancing. I try to find slots for home deliveries and avoid shopping, going out just for a walk once a day. Walking is still allowed in England. Luckily I don't need to go to work or home-schooling the kids. I'm quite content staying in with my freshly-baked muffins, coffee and knitting. 

I've taken a break from mosaic knitting and working on an intarsia throw. Long-time readers might remember seeing something similar from years ago. I try to keep things in secret for now because I run a Mystery Knit-a-long in an Estonian knitting forum for this pattern. I look forward to seeing what colours will be chosen and how they manage knitting the throw. The most complicated thing about this project is managing the yarns. There are rather large areas worked in the same colour. I prefer knitting straight from the skeins, not bobbins. Juggling 6-9 colours per row might get bit messy, need to be careful.

Võtsin pausi mosaiik-kudumisest ja koon hoopis intarsiat. Mustrimaailmas algas salakudumine selle mustriga. Ootan põnevusega, kuidas tekikesed välja näevad erinevates värvikombinatsioonides. See on alati nii huvitav mulle, kui disainerile, näha oma tööd teiste kudujate silmade läbi. Huvitav on ka kuulda, kuidas/kas nad saavad hakkama töötades 6-9 lõngakeraga ühel real. Sasipusade teke on väga tõenäoline!

The Soul of Spring Shawl is designed for an adventurous knitter, using several techniques to keep you on your toes throughout. The main body of the shawl is a shallow, elongated, isosceles triangle, worked in bias. The shawl is worked from side to side starting at one side of the wingspan, with the border knitted as you go using intarsia and short rows in the second half of the shawl. There is minimal finishing, no picking up stitches, and the length can be adjusted easily to suit your taste.

Pointless Shawl.

I sat down to write the story of the Pointless Shawl and realised, I don't remember where I got the idea! I knitted the shawl a year ago and it took just two weeks to complete. Some ideas just work out well. Asymmetrical triangular shawls has been popular for some years and still are. I wanted to try out the construction and add some own tweaks to it. So I added the lace border to start with. Main body of the shawl was meant to be black, but got boring to knit, I added white stripes to it. When the shawl was big enough I decided to add mosaic border and bring decreases to the edge. What I didn't think of, the change of  decrease placement cut off the point of the shawl! I was a bit disappointed at first, wanted to rip it back and re-knit. I posted a photo on Instagram and asked for opinions. The best advice was to call it a design feature and name the shawl pointless!

Nearly a year later I finally wrote the pattern, got it tech edited and test knitted to ensure everything works well. And here it is! If you like it, get your copy from here.

Selle salli lugu algas umbes aasta tagasi. Asümmeetrilised kolmnurksed sallid on juba mitmeid aastaid populaarsed olnud. Otsustasin ka lõpuks seda konstruktsiooni proovida kududa, ja ma ei saa ju teisiti, kui ikka pean omamoodi tegema. Otsustasin pitsilise serva kohe külge kududa, et poleks mingit silmuste üleskorjamist tarvis. Värvid valisin jaki järgi, must ja valge. Valged triibud said lisatud, kui musta põhiosa kudumine igavaks läks. Teise serva lisasin mosaiik mustri, et sall oleks huvitavam, ja see sobitub jakiga ka. Kahandused tõin mosaiigi serva. Salli tipu puudumist märkasin alles siis, kui sall valmis. Tipp kadus "tänu" kahanduste asukoha muutusele! Kui alguses olin valmis mosaiigi üles harutama ja uuesti kuduma, siis peale Instagramis nõu küsimist nimetasin selle disainielemendiks ja sall ongi Tiputa sall! Kuigi Google tõlge pakub Mõttetu sall... Nii või naa, kuidas keegi soovib :)

Knitted Work of Art 2. Kootud kunstiteos 2.

Do you still remember I posted about a knitted work of art back in June?
Well, it was received with excitement in artist's family. By the end I had to knit another! I love to knit when my work is loved! I used different design and brighter colours this time. I enjoyed the process, drawing schematics, choosing yarns, knitting intarsia.
Someone will be lucky to get the throw as a Christmas present! Wish it was me ;)

Mäletate veel pleedi, mille kudusin juunis?

Kingitus sai nii sooja vastuvõtu osaliseks kunstniku perekonnas, et mul tuli veel üks pleed kududa! Ma koon rõõmuga, kui tean, et mu tööd tunnustatakse. Intarsias on mingi võluvägi, mis teeb kogu töö nauditavaks, alates skeemi kujundamisest, lõngade valimisest, kudumisest, kõik kulgeb mõnusasti.

Keegi õnnelik saab selle pleedi jõulukingituseks. Soovin, et see oleks mina ;) Pean vist ühe endale ka kuduma!

Spice Up A Sofa. Sohvakaunistused.

 

I've abandoned my blog! Having several social media sites, Instagram, Facebook page, Ravelry, forums, it gets a bit overwhelming sometimes. Blogging needs more concentration, not as easy as just clicking likes. Ok, here I am again.

I had a lot of yarn left over from my Knitted Work of Art. I had several ideas, what to knit with it. Finally I decided to knit cushion covers. I wanted to work in intarsia again and looked for ideas for design. Final idea came from well-known car brand trademark. Can you tell which car I had in mind?

I think a cushion makes a great Christmas present for a son, brother, nephew or boyfriend. If you want to give a knitted present why not a cushion to cuddle?

Colour-blocking is a modern and trendy way to make a difference with bold splashes of geometric colour. Working in intarsia is fairly easy for an advanced beginner who is comfortable with the basic knit and purl stitches. I was a bit intimidated by intarsia before, all that bobbins tangling , felt too much of hassle. Now I can say one must not be sacred, it's easier than it seems, specially with quite large colour blocks. I worked straight from centre-pull skeins and enjoyed the process so much.

Olen oma blogi üsna unarusse jätnud! Viimasel ajal olen sotsiaalmeedias veidi aktiivsem olnud, Instagram, Facebooki leht, Ravelry, foorumid - kõik võtab aega. Blogimine nõuab rohkem keskendumist, ainult laikimisega hakkama ei saa ;)

Need padjad valmisid juba augustis. Kunstiteose kudumisest jäi lõnga üle. Esialgu mõtlesin kampsuni kududa, siis muutsin meelt. Mulle meeldis intarsias kududa ja otsisin uut ideed padjakatete disaini jaoks. Idee tuli ühe tuntud automargi märgist. Tunnete ära? Arvan, et padjad on suurepärane jõulukingitus autofännist pojale, vennale, sõbrale. Kudujale ju meeldib ka jõulukingitused ise teha ;)

Ma olen ikka arvanud, et intarsia on keeruline, kõik need lõngatutsud rippumas. Tegelikult pole keerulist midagi, eriti kui värve pole palju ja pinnad suured. Hele-hall lõng sai otsa, kuid teisi veel on. Otsin uusi ideid :)

Knitted Work of Art. Kootud kunstiteos.

Once upon a time two young people lived in their very modern home. One day the girl's mum visited them and on that visit she had seen the boy's granny's art exhibition catalogue on a shelf. The girl's mum, who was a passionate knitter, looked at the paintings and thought, what amazing works of art; modern, geometric, with clean lines, colours, shapes and proportions working together.  The mum thought the paintings  would make a great knitting pattern!

As time went by, the mum was going to visit them again and she wanted to make a gift for them. She decided to knit one of his granny's works of art. She searched for images, picked one which was a bit less complicated as she had not knitted intarsia before. She drew up the schematics, stitch by stitch, picked colours and then knitted and knitted, day and night. She worked from up to eight skeins at the same time. The mum's living room looked like there had been an explosion in a yarn store.

After some time she was ready to present the gift to the girl and boy.

Elasid kord Noormees ja Neiu oma kaunis kaasaegses kodus. Ühel päeval tuli neile külla Neiu Ema. Ta nägi riiulil Noormehe Vanaema kunstikataloogi. Neiu Ema, kes oli kirglik kuduja, vaatas maale ja mõtles, mis imelised maalid, modernsed, geomeetrilised, puhtad jooned, värvid, kujundid. Ma tahaksin kududa mõnd maali, mõtles Neiu Ema.

Aeg möödus, ja Emal oli jälle plaanis külla minna. Ta otsustas kududa pleedi Noormehe Vanaema maali järgi. Ta valis välja ühe maali, mil oli veidi vähem detaile ja värve. Ta polnud varem intarsias kudunud. Ta tegi valmis skeemi, silmus silmuse haaval, sobitas jooni ja värve. Siis ta kudus ja kudus, lõngakerad laual reas, korraga kuni kaheksa tükki. Koduste arvates nägi elamine välja, nagu oleks lõngapoes plahvatus toimunud. Ühel päeval oli kingitus valmis üleandmiseks.
