The Secret Garden Mittens. Kindad Salaaed.

 The colourful patterned knitwear by Norwegian designer Tori Seierstad (torirot in Ravelry) has caught my eye in Ravelry quite some time now. My favourites are the sweater Tuin and the Blomekrans gloves, blanket and vest set. When I found that she was organising a mystery knit-along for mittens, I immediately decided to take part. It is quite difficult to choose the yarns when you do not know what the pattern is going to look like. However the colours to choose from were given, but after release of the first part of the pattern I decided in favour of other yarns. The beginning was promising; I completed an interesting technique on the wrists that looks like roses climbing a wall in the background. Tori had asked who could guess what story she had found her inspiration from. I initially thought Sleeping Beauty, but it was the wrong answer. On the next part of the pattern there was a gate and a girl and by then it was quite clear for many that the pattern is based on The Secret Garden by F. H. Burnett. Whoever has read this story will find clues on the mittens quite easily; Colin and Mary, the rosary, the key to the gate, the wheel chair and a book. It is nice that the people knit the same pattern but the finished mittens look individual due to different colour choices. From this exercise I learned many new techniques. I have never knit the type of wrist style and finishing the thumb and the mittens the way the pattern demanded is a novelty for me.

I still haven’t read The Secret Garden but I watched the movie on YouTube whilst knitting the mittens and there is also an audio book available in English. I am very glad that I got to know this story through these mittens.

Kui leidsin, et ta korraldab kinnaste salakudumise, olin kohe osaline. Ühes küljest on päris keeruline valida lõngu, kui ei tea, mis muster tuleb. Värvid, mille hulgast valida, olid küll ette antud, kuid esimese mustriosa ilmudes otsustasin hoopis teiste lõngade kasuks. Algus oli paljutõotav, valmisid huvitavas tehnikas randmed, mis näevad välja nagu roniroosid müüri taustal. Tori küsis, kes arvab ära, mis loost ta inpiratsiooni on saanud. Arvasin, et Okasroosike, kuid see oli vale vastus. Järgmisel mustriosal oli tüdruk ja värav. Siis oli paljudel juba selge, mis looga on tegu: F. H. Burnett’i Salaaed. Kes on lugenud, leiab märksõnad kinnastelt kergelt üles, Mary ja Colin, roosiaed, võti, värav, ratastool ja raamat. Tore on vaadata samasuguseid, kuid siiski eriilmelisi kindaid, sõltuvalt kuduja värvivalikust. Õppisin ka mitmeid uusi tehnikaid. Selliseid randmeid pole varem kudunud, ja ka kinda ning pöidla lõpetamine on minu jaoks uudne.

Raamat on mul ikka lugemata, kuid kududes vaatasin filmi The Secret Garden on Youtube’st. Seal on ka inglisekeelne audioraamat olemas. Mul on väga hea meel, et kinnaste kaudu sain tundma seda armast lugu.
