Many years ago, I used to sew most of my clothes myself using patterns from Burda magazine. Usually I had no problem as the fit was fine. I just selected a pattern, cut and sewed it.
Now, several years later and moving to another country and gaining a bit of weight, I decided to take up sewing again.
I have been shopping for clothes, here in England, for a little while so I know which size to look for in patterns.
I obtained a Burda Style magazine, selected a pattern I
liked which matched my UK size.
When I cut the pattern out it seemed to be quite small for me,
so I measured it and added a few centimetres here and there. It was only
because of my experience in sewing that no harm was done and no fabric was
wasted.
Aastaid tagasi õmblesin enamiku oma rõivaist ise, kasutades
Burda, Silueti või Rigas Modes lõikeid. Burda lõigetega tavaliselt probleeme
polnud. Võtsin lõike, lõikasin välja ja õmblesin. Nüüd, peale pikki aastaid,
kolimist teise riiki ja mõningaste kilode lisandumist, tuli tahtmine jälle
õmmelda. Olles aastaid Inglismaal elanud ja rõivaid ostnud, tean oma UK
suurusnumbrit. Seega ostsin Burda Style ajakirja ja ajasin välja lõike vastavalt
oma suurusele. Silmaga peale vaadates tundus lõige väike olevat. Mõõtsin ennast
ja lõikeid, lisasin sentimeetreid sinna-tänna. Tänu oma eelnevale kogemusele
kahju ei tekkinud, kangast ei raisanud.
This made me want to find out why this had gone wrong, so I
started examining the sizing charts and found out that there are many different
charts and they don’t always match.
The M&S chart below shows the UK against European sizing
which seems to be different according to which European country. For example a
UK size 14 is size 40 in Sweden but 46 in Italy! This begs the question – what is
the correct European size?
Küll aga pani see mind mõtlema, mis läks valesti? Hakkasin
uurima mõõdutabeleid, mida on palju ja mis omavahel ei klapi. Näiteks M&S
tabelist võib näha, et erinevates Euroopa riikides on kasutusel erinevad
suurusnumbrid. Näiteks UK suurus 14 on Rootsis nr. 40, Itaalias nr. 46! Mis
siis on tegelikult Euroopa suurusnumbrid? Googeldamine vastust ei andnud või ei
osanud ma leida. Ju ikka eurodirektiiv olemas on kusagil.

Comparing the bust measurements between the M&S chart
and Burda Style chart - for example size 14 bust measurements differ by 4 cm,
size 20 differs by 8 cm.
If I compare the Burda Style magazine and web page charts,
EU size 40 is US size 10 in one but US size 14 in another?
I have learnt my lesson to trust my measurements not size.
Like an old Estonian proverb says: Measure nine times, cut
once!

Võrreldes näiteks rinnaümbermõõtu UK nr. 14 M&S tabelis
ja Burda tabelis on vahe 4 cm, number 20 puhul on vahe juba 8 cm.
Võrreldes Burda Style ajakirja ja veebilehe tabeleid EU
suurus 40 on ühes US 10, teises US 14?
Mina olen oma õppetunni saanud, usalda mõõdulinti, mitte
suurusnumbrit.
Ehk järgi ikka vanarahvatarkust, üheksa korda mõõda, üks
kord lõika!
